Research activities
Research projects Maja recently participated in include studies of social media, digital diplomacy, election campaigning and journalism. She has published in top communications journals, such as Digital journalism, Journalism, and Journalism Studies. Maja is the author of books ‘Tweeting Brexit: Social Media and the Aftermath of the EU Referendum’ (Routledge, 2022) and ‘Managing emotions in journalism’ (Palgrave, 2023).
Maja won a number of financial awards for her research, individually or as part of a team, from European Commission, Arts and Humanities Research Council, Open Society, University of East Anglia, Middlesex University London, City of Zagreb, and others.
Current Teaching
Maja leads several undergraduate and postgraduate modules, such as Practising Journalism, Digital Storytelling, Global Journalism and News Cultures, Multimedia and Digital Journalism skills, and Major project. She has also developed and taught modules such as Political Communication, Journalism Skills, Multimedia Journalism, Researching Journalism, etc.
She supervises postgraduate research students working on projects focused on journalism, digital and social media, and political communication. For example, she was the Director of Studies to Christa Sathish's PhD project 'Investigating academics' social media use.' She is currently supervising Maryam Jabeen's PhD project focusing on crisis literacy in the context of covid-19 pandemic in Pakistan.
Maja previously acted as Programme Leader for BA Creative Writing & Journalism, BA Journalism & Communication, and BA Digital Media.
