Biography

My journeyin the field of tourism and academia has been shaped by a blend of professionalexperience and academic pursuits.

Beforetransitioning into academic roles, I spent significant time working in thetourism industry, both within tour operators and hotels. These experiencesprovided me with valuable insights into the industry's practices andchallenges. Being born and raised in Crete, I gained firsthand experience ofthe impacts of tourism on local communities, which inspired my interest inpursuing studies in tourism and later in conducting research on sustainablepractices within the industry.

Myacademic journey culminated in earning a PhD, where my thesis, titledSustainability and Small Tourism Firms in Crete: A Grounded Theory Approach, delved into the social and psychological factors influencing the adoption ofsustainable practices by tourism business owners. This research has beenrecognised and published in two top journals, contributing to the scholarlydiscourse on sustainable tourism.

For thepast 17 years, I have served as a lecturer, passionately sharing my knowledgeand expertise with young minds. I find great joy in teaching and mentoringstudents, empowering them to become critical thinkers, responsible citizens, and future leaders. My dedication to student success has been recognisedthrough being shortlisted twice for student-led awards, highlighting mycommitment to pedagogy and student support.

Currently,my research interests lie in the application of the United Nations SustainableDevelopment Goals (SDGs) in business practices, as well as exploring the impactof menopause on women in the hospitality and tourism industry. I amparticularly interested in understanding how employers can provide support towomen during this stage of life, contributing to a more inclusive andsupportive work environment.

Insummary, my journey from the tourism industry to academia has equipped me witha unique perspective and a passion for sustainable practices and education. Iam committed to advancing knowledge in these areas and making a positive impactwithin the industry and beyond.
