Research activities

Alexandre is currently completing a PhD inthe field of Paralympic sports where he is the lead researcher for theinternational body of wheelchair fencing (IWAS). The research is focusing onthe process of classification for the sport of wheelchair fencing. The aim ofclassification is to promote fair competition by placing athletes into differentcategories based on their impairment profile. All athletes in a given categoryshould therefore have a similar level of activity limitation within the sportpracticed. In recent years, the International Paralympic Committee hasrequested Paralympic sports such as wheelchair fencing to upgrade theirclassification process to an evidence-based classification system where the decision-makingprocess relies on empirical evidence. The outcome of the research will then beimplemented by IWAS at international level within the sport of wheelchairfencing.

Biography

Alexandre has been working forMiddlesex University since 2015 and at present works as an Associate Lecturer teachingon the undergraduate sport and exercise science degree programmes. He iscurrently undertaking his PhD, with focus on athlete classification inwheelchair fencing. Alexandre has a strength and conditioning background andhas specialised in disability sports where he has worked with a number ofParalympic athletes competing in wheelchair fencing, para athletics andcerebral palsy football. Alex is also consulting as a strength and conditioningcoach to the French U23 national team in wheelchair fencing.
