Research activities

Michael's background is in Commercial and Leisure based Adaptive Reuse projects which focus on Sustainable Practice within the Construction Industry. In 2021 he won the 'Conversations about Climate Change' competition with his work being exhibited at the Building Center in London.

As joint head of Employability for the Interiors Programme, Michael presented a paper at the Annual Teaching and Learning Conference 2023, which highlighted the links between students work, sustainability and future proofing of skills.

Michael is interested in how technology affects and enables our understanding of space. In 2018 he worked on 'Digital Showscapes' presenting Final Year Interior Design student's work in VR.

Third Year Module Leader of BA Interior Design leading IAD3110 Interior Design: Integration - Research and Practice and IAD3120 Interior Design: Integration - Major Project, with responsibility for IAD2150 Interiors: Placement 1 and IAD3150 Interior Design: Placement 2.


Biography

Michael Westthorp MA(RCA) FHEA, is Programme Leader for the MA Interiors (Architecture and Design) course and third year module leader of the BA Interior Design course. 

Prior to his role as Programme Leader, Michael was the founder of the award winning Outline-Projects design practice, which concentrated on Commercial Adaptive Reuse projects and had work published around the world.
