They will help you build the resilience needed to support others through pregnancy, childbirth and neonatal care.
In our highly respected midwifery conversion course, you will develop essential skills for modern midwifery practice. The curriculum includes modules on anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, as well as cultural and sociological issues.
Your time will be balanced between university learning and practical experience, allowing you to effectively link theory and practice.
About your course
Our Pre-registration Midwifery course prepares accountable, autonomous midwives who work in partnership with women. It builds on your existing knowledge and experience of healthcare systems and practice, to enable you to provide midwifery care across the continuum of care for women, newborn infants, and families.
Part one will introduce you to the role of the midwife and normal midwifery care including anatomy and physiology. Time spent during practice placements will help you to link foundational theory to midwifery practice.
Part two will build on the skills you have developed in part one, introducing you to complex care, managing emergencies and leadership skills.
This course enables you to achieve outcomes and proficiencies in-line with the Nursing and Midwifery Council, leading to entry to register as a midwife.
Modules
Our exceptional team will teach you the theory and skills needed to qualify as a Midwife with the Nursing and Midwifery Council. Your studies will include anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, cultural and psychosocial issues, interprofessional working, legal and ethical issues. Upon graduation, you will be able to confidently assess, plan, implement and evaluate effective midwifery care. Your learning will be integrated with that of other students from our School of Health and Education and designated study days will be organised for shared learning with midwifery, medical and social work students. You will also develop interpersonal and collaborative skills to help you work effectively in multi-professional teams across healthcare and related sectors.
The BSc(Hons) Shortened midwifery course requires you to study full-time for 86 weeks, including 12 weeks annual leave.
The course is made up of 50% theory and 50% practice. The course is divided into two 10-month parts and you will take three 30 credit modules in each part of the programme. This is divided up as two Level 5 modules and one Level 6 module in the first 10 months of the programme, and three Level 6 modules in the final 10 months of the programme. All modules are compulsory.
This module helps you to integrate anatomy and physiology and related theory with practice, building on your existing nursing knowledge and skills. You will be encouraged to relate this knowledge to the midwife’s role, skills and responsibility when providing care to healthy women and their families during pregnancy, labour and puerperium. Throughout the module the emphasis will be on normal anatomy and physiology, drawing on your previous knowledge as qualified nurses and assisting you in your transition from nurse to midwife.
This module builds a firm foundation of knowledge relating to normal midwifery for the mother. It will help you recognise and appreciate the midwife’s role, responsibilities and sphere of practice when providing care to healthy women during the antenatal, intrapartum and postpartum periods and to enable the integration of theory with practice. During this module, you will build on your communication and research skills. The module will also draw on your previous experiences as nurses to facilitate the transition from nurse to midwife. The MORA (Midwifery Ongoing Record of Achievement) book will be incorporated for this module.
This module enables you to undertake the examination of the neonate from birth to six-eight weeks of age. The theoretical and practical knowledge gained during the module will enable theory to be applied to practice with regards to physiology and recognition of deviation from normality in order to support parents in the partnership of care of their new born baby. This will enable the provision of a framework of practice and will empower you in an enhanced and autonomous role as lead professional within the care of the newborn.
In the final ten months of the course you will study three Level 6 modules. All modules are compulsory and build on the knowledge and skills you have acquired in the first year to prepare you for autonomous midwifery practice.
This module helps you understand complex care in midwifery and deviations from normality whilst working with the multiagency team. You will be supported to develop an understanding of recognising complexities and effectively managing the mother and her baby to produce good birth outcomes. You will learn to participate and manage emergencies when caring for mothers and foetus/newborn during childbirth process. There will be a focus on midwifery proficiencies in the administration and calculation of medicines.
This module enables you to undertake the examination of the neonate from birth to six-eight weeks of age. The theoretical and practical knowledge gained during the module will allow early identification of abnormalities and/or potential problems in order that the baby, parents and professionals can be informed and prepared for the required care. This will enable the provision of a framework of practice and will empower you in an enhanced and autonomous role as lead professional within the care of the newborn.
This module ensures you move towards the role of autonomous midwife practitioner and that you are competent to deal with a variety of normal and/or challenging situations in midwifery practice. During this module you will be encouraged to scrutinize and reflect upon your own practice and critically examine the impact of external influences on the midwifery profession as you consolidate your management skills within the midwifery practice areas. You will also be able to promote normality, and act as an advocate for women and support their choices. There will be a focus on change management and Innovation to improve on existing practices and offer evidence based midwifery care.
