Midwifery team honoured for forward-thinking approach and commitment to education

Middlesex University’s Midwifery Team has won a national award for its exceptional leadership and dedication to midwifery teaching.
The team achieved recognition in the London Maternity and Midwifery Festival Trailblazer Awards 2025 for outstanding achievement and commitment in education at a ceremony last week.
Jo Killingley, Director of Programmes and Lead Midwife for Education at Middlesex University, said that over the past year, the team had gone above and beyond to ensure that students had received an exceptional educational experience while their commitment to students, colleagues, and the profession had been inspiring.
The team have championed diversity and inclusivity, leading to impactful initiatives that have been recognised in nominations for national awards, while their work in delivering practical hands-on learning in the University’s simulated hospital environment at West Stand in the StoneX Stadium have further enriched the educational journey for students and shown a forward-thinking approach to midwifery education.
Jo, who spoke at the awards conference, said: “Our efforts to build a supportive community have been evident through personal encouragement, providing an uplifting presence on social media, and fostering a sense of belonging and motivation. This strong sense of community combined with the team’s drive to motivate and inspire others have played an important role in helping our midwifery programme prepare students for fulfilling careers in midwifery.”
“The Middlesex University Midwifery Team have been trailblazers in curriculum development, while also being a source of constant encouragement for both students and colleagues."

Jo added that even with the current challenges in the higher education sector, the Middlesex University midwifery programme has thrived and continued to maintain high standards and attract top talent.
Members of the Midwifery Team have current first-hard experience of working as a midwife in the UK and internationally, while the course has been developed in partnership with local NHS trusts providing students with placements in leading maternity units in London.
In addition to their professional achievements, the team has consistently supported colleagues, ensuring that teamwork and morale remain strong.
“The Middlesex University Midwifery Team’s leadership embodies compassion, resilience, and excellence, qualities that make them truly deserving of national recognition. The past year has been a testament to their exceptional teamwork and dedication to midwifery education, and it is fitting for their contributions to be celebrated among peers across the UK,” she said.
