Funded MSc by Research Opportunity in Analytical Chemistry

Get in touch

The Faculty of Science and Technology at Middlesex University are looking to recruit a highly motivated graduate to its MSc Analytical Chemistry by research programme starting in September 2025. The position is associated with a scholarship (UK fee-level waiver and stipend).

Middlesex University - Faculty of Science and Technology

Starting: September 2025

Location: Middlesex University, Faculty of Science and Technology

Eligibility: At least an upper second in a relevant subject

Studentship Duration: 1 Year

Project overview

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) from various drug classes are found in wastewater worldwide, raising concerns about their potential impacts on both the environment and human health. These substances typically enter wastewater through human excretion and the improper disposal of medications, and conventional wastewater treatment plants often struggle to remove them effectively, allowing these contaminants to persist in the environment.

Closed water systems in settings such as university campuses, schools, and prisons provide a unique opportunity to study specific populations. By monitoring wastewater for PPCPs and recreational drugs, researchers can gain insights into the overall health of these communities. This approach can inform improvements in local and broader public health systems. Additionally, since wastewater systems can serve as pathways for PPCPs to enter the environment, it is crucial to understand the prevalence, fate, and impacts of these substances.

Research Objectives:

  1. To develop and optimize a method for detecting and quantifying small molecule metabolites.
  2. To measure the concentrations of these selected metabolite compounds in untreated wastewater.
  3. To investigate the fluctuations of these compounds over a set time period and identify any correlations with significant events.

Who are we looking for

The studentship is ideal for those looking to enhance their skills or advance their career in the field of analytical chemistry, provided they meet the entry requirement of at least an upper second in a relevant subject. Applicants can be in the final year of their degree but will be required to provide a copy of their academic transcripts and expected degree outcome.

Please note: the successful applicant will be required to undergo full vaccinations for tetanus, polio and hepatitis B as well as subsequent blood titres to ensure immunity. Pre-existing vaccinations are desirable but not required.

This is a fully funded MRes providing a stipend and fee-waiver to a UK fee level.

How to apply:

Applications are open and will be accepted up to 17:00 on 13th April 2025, please send a 2-page CV to Dr Perry Devo along with a cover letter explaining why you would like to undertake this project.
